How much will an SAT score of 1730 help me get into college?

Alright, I just took the SAT in may and got a 530 on Critical Reading, a 620 on Math and a 580 on Writing coming to a total of 1730. I didnt do much prep for the test so i could probably raise it a bit if i take it again. I’m happy with my score but I’ll be honest, my grades suck, im usually labeled as an underachiever because I take AP/honors courses but usually just squeak by with a C. Its not that i dont try, I just don’t function well in a high school-style educational atmosphere. I do tons of extra corricular clubs/activities, but I feel like my grades might keep me from getting very far. Is a 1730 on the SAT going to do much to help me get into a decent college despite my average grades?

It depends on what you mean by a decent college. A 1730 is not bad. It’s above average. However, in the contemporary world, even competitive high school freshman can scrape a score of 2000—I myself am a freshman who earned a 188 on the PSAT. But I don’t understand your logic of overloading yourself with tons of AP courses if you can’t handle them. A “C” isn’t going to help you so much. It would be wise of you droped down to regular or most preferably honors courses. Anyway, I would work on getting those SAT scores up. If you are aiming for Yale, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Harvard, Stanford and MIT, that score is useless. They would need scores of 2200 and above. If you are trying out for UC Santa Barbara, UC Sanfransisco or UC Santa Cruz, it might just be perfect. Oh yes, and mind you, UC colleges are great.
Also, the grades and SAT scores are the only factors. If you have made a GREAT impact in extracurricular activities, have awesome teacher recomendations or something distuinguishing, heck you might even get into Stanford! Good luck.
Also, I understand the SAT’s vocabulary is pretty hard. So, you might want to try your hand at the ACT. They don’t have hard vocab words, while they do require great reading skills.
