What education is required to become a personal trainer?

I am interested in perhaps working at a gym, or eventually starting my own. I do not want to sell fitness memberships, charging poor folks $800 for some premium package deal and lying to them about their fitness level. I really want to help people become healthy and happy. I don’t really want to teach group yoga or something. I want to help people on an individual level as a personal fitness trainer. What education does it require and where would I be eligible to work?
