Preparing for the tests.Work Hard and Relax !

Friday, October 30th, 2009
F.A.C.T asked:

Many students work really hard for their tests (SAT/GRE/GMAT/TOEFL/IELTS). But still they do not score good marks. Morever, they are unable to make out what went wrong. A very BIG reason for doing bad in the test is that they worked HARD. May be too hard. There is a whole lot of difference between working ‘hard’ and working ‘intelligent’.

It is very important to make a proper schedule for your studies and follow it properly. Break your study time into short intervals. An ideal duration for one session is two hours. Study for two hours and then take a short rest for upto half an hour. In that half an hour, you can eat or drink something light. Don’t take a big meal if you want to study. Eat something light at short intervals. If you take a heavy meal, you will feel lethargic and may fall asleep. If you want to sleep during day, take a siesta after lunch. It is also known by other names like cat nap or power nap. After this, you can start with fresh energy. It should not exceed 30 minutes. Else it will make you feel lazy.If you are tired or bored of studies, do not force yourself too much. take a break. You can do deep breathing exercises. Our brain does not work to its full capacity if it lacks oxygen. Therefore, it is our responsibility to supply it with fresh oxygen. You can take a cup of strong tea or coffee also.

The most important day of your preparation is the previous day of the exam.

And the most vital activity of that previous day should be to RELAX. You have prepared for the hundred meter race. You have worked very hard for it. Hence, DON NOT practice just before going to the field. What I mean to say is that your frame of mind at the time of the test is very important. If you have already exhausted it, it is going to take revenge which may be disastrous.

Therefore, take proper sleep on the previous night. Eat good food before going for the test. ‘Good food’ means the food which provides you energy but does not make you feel sleepy. Drink water at regular intervals. While taking the test ATTACK every question. It means that you should be fully alert and should utilize your brain to the hilt.

It is important to work hard for whichever test you are preparing for. But it is equally important to reward yourself on a daily basis for the hard work you have done. You must be aware of the saying : ” All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. Hence, avoid being a dull boy and enjoy and relax after you have done your hard work. All the best……..

A Guide to “How is Tap Water Tested For Contamination?”

Friday, October 23rd, 2009
Dewayne Blalock asked:

Have you ever sat and wondered to yourself how is tap water tested for contamination? There must be a way for researchers, and scientists to be able to come up with conclusive results as to what is in our drinking water reservoirs, and how much. After all there have been tens of thousands of chemical agents that have been reported as being present.

There are relatively simple methods for being able to deduce what types of chemical agents that you have present in your water. The problem is that you have to be able to run screens for not only groups of toxic chemicals, but also for the individual chemicals that are within these groups. That takes a lot of time, and effort, as well as manpower to complete.

So far as how is tap water tested for contamination it is done using simple reactive chemicals that test for both the contaminant groupings, and for the singular agents. These reactants can not only tell you exactly what contaminants are in your water, but they can tell you exactly how much of each one is present. This is accomplished by the reactive chemicals changing color.

A reactant will turn a certain color as a result of coming into contact with the chemical that it is designed to seek. How brightly or deeply the color change will give the reader a solid idea of exactly how much of the chemical they are dealing with. This form of testing is very important, especially considering that there are over two thousand carcinogens in our water.

The number of these carcinogenic agents in our water makes it imperative that it is known how high their content is. Here the question becomes not so much how is tap water tested for contamination, but how often is it being tested, and whether or not the numbers that are being recorded are accurate. There have been stories of waste-water treatment facilities doctoring their books so as to stay within EPA regulations.

These facilities are supposed to keep the levels of certain toxic chemicals within the realm of what the EPA has deemed as “safe”, but many times it has been found that the levels of these contaminants have been far over those measurements. It is really pointless for them to be measuring the amount anyway, since the equipment that these facilities do not have the adequate equipment to stop these chemicals from reaching your home.

So you know the answer to how is tap water tested for contamination, and you have also been informed that the testing is for naught. So what do you do in this situation since you know that there is no way that the waste-water treatment agencies can offer you protection? About the only thing that you can do is invest in a home water purification system that contains everything that you need in order to keep these chemicals at bay.

Then the matter of how is tap water tested for contamination is not something that you will ever have to worry about.

What is the PSAT and How Does it Help Prepare for the SAT?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009
Heather Eagar asked:

If you’ve heard of the SAT exam then it is likely that you’ve also heard of the PSAT exam. Many students choose to take this exam as a form of preparation for the SAT within the same school year, or possibly in the following year. If you’ve never heard of the PSAT, or are just curious about what it is, take a few moments to learn more about it and how it can help you prepare for the SAT.

What is the PSAT?

The PSAT is also known as the Preliminary SAT or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. It is co-sponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Students in high school have probably already heard about the test in their freshman year, as many schools begin to prepare them for it so that it can be taken in the sophomore year.

The main objective of this test is to give students an idea of what to expect on their SAT exam. It gives them an opportunity to take all of the steps involved in the actual test (testing on the same sections and being timed) without suffering any true penalties. The test is free and offers a great building block to the SAT that is usually taken in the junior or senior year. So students who want get some of the SAT test jitters out of their system can benefit well from taking the PSAT.

How Does the PSAT Help Prepare for the SAT?

As mentioned previously, the biggest way that taking the PSAT helps to prepare for the SAT is that they are virtually identical tests. The PSAT has the same types of sections, including critical reading, math, and writing skills, and all questions are multiple choice. This works out well in giving students a clear idea of what the real experience will feel like.

In preparing to take the PSAT, it’s not much different than preparing for the actual SAT exam. However, it’s not uncommon for schools to make preparation a part of the school curriculum since it is tied with the National Merit Scholarship. With training in the classroom setting to prepare for the PSAT, you can take some of this knowledge with you as you sit down and prepare for the real exam in the following semester or year. To learn when the PSAT is available in your area, visit the National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s website.

Getting Additional SAT Help

It’s great to know that the PSAT is an excellent tool for SAT preparation; however, it’s not the actual SAT test. In other words, it’s still a good idea to get specialized help to prepare for the actual exam. This help can come in the form of study groups or SAT preparation courses offered locally. Also, students are finding that online SAT preparation courses are equally capable of preparing them efficient - and with these online courses comes the convenience of preparing from home.

There’s no doubt that the PSAT is a great exam to take if you’re serious about eventually taking the SAT. So before diving into the big test, it doesn’t hurt to consider how you can benefit from this useful preparatory test.

The Systems Approach to Training (SAT): A Business Training Methodology That Works

Friday, October 16th, 2009
Philip Tufano asked:

By Philip Tufano

InterActive Training Incorporated (ITI) is at the forefront of providing a broad range of strategic consulting services to corporations and educational institutions in developing training, technical documentation capabilities and web design for implementing distance learning programs.

ITI works with organizations interested in developing and implementing internal and customer facing training offerings, E-Learning programs, technical documentation development capabilities and corporate communication departments.

ITI has developed large scale training programs for SAP and Siebel implementations for over 2,000 end users on some projects. We have developed customized training programs for manufacturing corporations, software companies, the US Government, and foreign and multi-national organizations.

Some of our past clients include:

* USAID

* The US Treasury Department

* Time Warner

* ISO

* Fidelity Investments

* Fleet Financial Corp

At ITI we us the Systems Approach to Training (SAT) methodology, a proven results driven method of training an audience that incorporates evaluation and focused course curriculum development for a specific need, expectation and audience.

The Systems Approach to Training (SAT) methodology is a five-phase process that ensures that training accomplishes the following goal:

* A practical, results-oriented training program that provides people with the skills and knowledge to do their tasks correctly, efficiently, and with confidence.

Overview

The systematic approach and development model goes by many names; however, Systems Approach to Training has remained the standard. This model takes into consideration audience characteristics, the nature of the knowledge, skills, job, and tasks to be learned, and environmental constraints.

ISD is a field that takes many of its concepts and principles from various disciplines. For example, as an applied discipline, SAT uses learning theory from psychology to determine how a person learns (learning style) and how to best address their learning need. Instructional theory uses that person’s learning style to determine how to best design instruction.

 The five-phases of the SAT model are:

* Analysis

* Design

* Development

* Implementation

* Evaluation or Control

Metrics may be pictorially represented as a linear model, but the approach involves continuous iterations. Decisions made in one phase affect actions and plans in other phases.

Graphic Representation of the SAT Methodology:

The Systems Approach to Training (SAT) Methodology and the Instructional System Development (ISD) are Synonymous…

SAT EVALUATION PROCESS

Analysis

An aggressive evaluation process to determine the effectiveness of the training program along with concise customer feedback to ensure that expectations are being met (according to the Training Needs Assessment) is vital for the success of any training program.

Analysis provides a method of responding to changes in human resource requirements, solving job performance problems, and learning from “real world” experience.

In the analysis phase, detailed practical studies are performed to determine what areas require instruction, learner characteristics, the cost effectiveness of a selected delivery system (e.g. Technology Based Training –TBT), and the scope, timeline, and budget of a training project/program.

These facts are gathered to make informed training development decisions and provides the linkage between the job and the training project/program.

The following types of analysis may be completed:

* Needs or Performance Analysis

* Audience or Learner Analysis

* Job/Task Analysis

* Skill/Knowledge (Ability) Analysis

* Content Analysis

* Learning Analysis

* Instructional Analysis

EVALUATION METHOD

* Evaluation

* Analysis

* Design

* Development

* Implementation.

Design

Design uses the performance information collected earlier to help the training project/program take shape.

The information gathered specifies, measurable terms, the knowledge, skills, and aptitudes that training will develop.Learning objectives are developed for groups of related knowledge and skills.

These written statements of learning outcomes define exactly when, what, and how well the learner must perform during training.Defining how individual tasks are performed focuses training development efforts.

In addition, the information gathered permits more effective decisions regarding such things as:

        * How the learning materials will be

        * Organized and presented

        * Learning activities & instructional strategies

        * Time spent on each topic

        * The use of presentation media

        * How learners will be evaluated

        * Evaluation instruments

Practical measures as well as written/knowledge tests are produced to ensure that learning objectives are achieved and competencies are reliably evaluated.

Development

Development organizes the instructional materials needed for learners to achieve the learning objectives.

Emphasis is on maximizing the use of existing materials and resources. Instructor and

learner activities are defined and these activities describe how the instructor and learners will perform during training to achieve  the learning objectives.

Existing, suitable training materials and lesson plans are selected and new ones produced as needed. Resulting training materials are reviewed for technical accuracy, tried out with a group of

learners, and revised as necessary.

Performance based training materials are the products of this phase.

Implementation

Implementation is the process of putting the training project/program into operation.This finalized training is ready to be delivered to the target audience.

If the training is to be instructor-led or facilitated, instructors are selected and trained usually with a train-the- trainer session. Training is delivered as planned and learner and instructor performance is evaluated.

These evaluations serve two purposes:

* First, they verify that learners have achieved the learning objectives.

* Second, learner evaluation results and instructor comments are useful for future program revisions and iterations and follow-up evaluation.

Evaluation or Control

The Evaluation or Control phase ensures trainings continuing ability to produce qualified workers.

A Follow-up evaluation is conducted to get an assessment of how well the training prepared learners to perform their jobs after having been on the job for a selected period of time.

Evaluation is the dynamic process of assessing performance, identifying concerns, and initiating corrective actions.

Data sources for evaluation often include:

* Exams or Testing

* Surveys

* Phone or Personal Interviews

* Course evaluation results

* Service or product data

* Observations
