Regardless of how accurately or inaccurately the SAT’s assess and grade a students knowledge level in relation to collegiate studies, they are certainly here to stay. Yes, the very fact that many students often cram for a test which is supposed to establish their existing knowledge base is somewhat counterintuitive to the purpose, but in reality, even that makes sense. After all, most students will be using their last minute learning skills on a regular basis once they get to college.

There are numerous study guides available for SAT preparation, one of which is available from The College Board, who administers the test. Prepping for the test can be difficult for students as the test is taken pre-graduation, but certainly represents time well spent. For students who plan to apply for scholarships, a high SAT score in combination with a stellar grade point average will often help.

The SAT’s are broken down into three segments, which include critical reading, mathematics and writing. Each segment is administered in a time based format, and for many students, the amount of time given won’t be ample enough. For this reason, it’s a good idea to be prepared to skip specific questions in an effort to complete the greater majority of the test, returning to the unanswered questions if time allows.

The SAT Writing section comes first, and can make time management difficult as the test is divided into multiple choice and short essay. The critical reading portion is next, followed by mathematics. Depending on the strengths of the student, certain sections may require a great deal more preparation than others. Students who are good analytical thinkers typically grasp mathematical formulas with relative ease, yet may have trouble with vocabulary, sentence structure or conveying their side of an argument in the essay portion. Conversely, many students who can understand and articulate their thoughts through written word are much more at ease with the two sections that don’t involve mathematics.

The best way to prepare for the SAT’s is to focus heavily on the areas you are weak in, though each section deserves some level of preparation if you want to do your best. Plenty of students have overestimated their strengths only to realize midway through a test section that they weren’t as prepared as they initially thought.

This nerve racking, extremely difficult time during a teenagers life will leave them sweating with papers spread out over the floor, stressing over essays and application, and regularly breaking out in facial blemishes. For those internet-savy kids, there is salvation. Many sites and forums help high school juniors and seniors through the difficult process of college application. I have just been through this grueling process, and I decided that were seldom few people who can so vividly remember the process as someone who just experienced it. Looking back, I realize I could have implemented a few organizational steps that would have helped me greatly. These included college visits, application decisions, college essays, SATs, and recommendations.

College visits are one of the most important processes of them all. They show colleges that you are seriously interested in attending their programs. If you don’t visit, for any reason, the college may interpret it as a lack of interest in their school. If you live far away, you might not be able to visit, and many colleges will forgive you for this. If you have a relative or friend near the college, consider visiting them and the college at the same time. It could really help your chances. Colleges visits need to be started as the first thing, far before anything else. If you expect to begin applying to colleges in late September or a little earlier, try to schedule as many visits as you can during the previous April, May, and June. The summer is not a very good time to visit because the classes are not in session and you won’t have a chance to see the students conducting themselves in a regular college environment.

The second step in the process is deciding where you want to apply. You should make sure to apply to at least 2 fall back schools, 2-4 schools that fit your academic record, and 1-3 reach schools. Its important to have at least 2 fall backs schools because on the off chance that one of them rejects you, you will have the other one to rely on. You should not apply to "fit" schools, that are above your level, as that will leave you disappointed and discouraged. Likewise, don’t let other people talk you out of applying to colleges that you really believe that you can get into.

The college essay is a piece of the application process that allows the admissions officers to see a side of you that grades and scores will not reflect. The topic of the essay is not so much important as the way you write it. If you write that you really want to go to the school because you have this, this, and that quality, then your essay will not likely make an impression on its readers. If you write a story that SHOWS the qualities that you possess, you are more likely to make a good impression.

SAT scores allow the entire student population of the United States to demonstrate their skills on an even plane. Preparation for the test needs to be rigorous. Studying from books is extremely useful, but hiring a tutor is the best way to go. If it is affordable in your area, find a tutor for 1 or all of the subjects. They will help gauge your skills and see where you need to study harder. You should also really review the test taking tips on collegeboard.com because they are very helpful.

Teacher recommendations are extremely difficult to obtain for some people. Some students aren’t the teachers "favorites", as some might call them, and can find it difficult to get a recommendation from someone who likes them. You will be surprised though, to find that when you speak with some teachers who you were on decent terms with, actually liked you, and wrote an amazing recommendation for you that would help you get into an exceptional college. It happened to me, and the only way to know if they like you is to ask for a recommendation. If they say that they are swamped and you should ask them later, drop it. If they say yes and seem very enthused, then let them write the recommendation. It is likely to be exceptional.

I hope my tips helped all those needy juniors, and seniors in the future, who are struggling with this process. No worries, because soon it will be over, and whether you feel as though you’ve completed your job well or not, the answers will come and you can’t do much about it after you send your applications so there isn’t really a point to stress. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the quiet time until your answers come back.

Instead it told me that I got a 680 on my critical reading, a 550 on my math, 610 on writing, 65 on multiple choice and 7 on my essay. Is my real score the sum of critical reading, math, and writing? Or the sum of all of the scores that they gave me, including the essay and multiple choice?

Select Your Options

Applying to either too many or too few colleges and universities can be a tactical error. A good number to shoot for is between 5 and 8. Choose a few schools in which you are at least 90% sure you will be accepted, just to be safe. Think about your skills and try to locate colleges that focus in these areas. Also, select one or two schools for which you have a preference but believe your chances are somewhat less of being accepted. Then make an attempt to take a campus tour at the schools you are considering to make sure you like them.

What in the world is the “backdoor to piano playing?

Chords.

There is a “backdoor” to playing the piano that is both fun and quick — it involves using chord patterns: years and years of scales, drills, rote practicing, etc. Chords are like shorthand — they are a shortcut to playing the piano without all those boring lessons.

Formal training is fine if you have the time and money. But most adults don’t want to wait forever before they can play something enjoyable on the piano. Did you hate piano lessons as much as I did. Not only that, but all I could do was play the written music exactly as it was written. Without the sheet music in front of me, I didn’t have a clue what to do. So I lost interest in piano playing until the incident described above. But shortly after that, I had the opportunity to play in a school combo — but to do that, I had to learn chords, and learn them fast.

I didn’t really know where to turn, so I sent for a $2. in some mechanics type magazine I saw this ad for a chart of chords and soon I was playing chords such as Em7 and G7 with both hands. Talk about excited! It wasn’t long before I started to play all kinds of tunes using various chords & progressions. And I discovered that my sight-reading speed greatly improved at the same time, because now I understood what I was seeing on the printed page!

So I came in through the back door instead, and now I enjoy what I used to hate! Why? Because I understand what I’m doing because now I understand chords and chord progressions. I eventually went on to get advanced degrees in music and literature from Southern Oregon University — and it was easy because of all I had learned about music theory and harmony due to playing and understanding chords.

Can you do the same? There’s really no reason why you can’t if you have the desire. Start looking at sheet music with new eyes: look for notes that make up chords and then analyze those chords. Before long you’ll start seeing a pattern of recurring chords - in other words, chord progressions. Do this for a few months while simultaneously learning about chords and how they are formed, and music will take on a new dimension for you. Why be tied to the written music score when you can view music like a “road map” that takes you from here to there.

When you have completed a bachelor’s degree, you can specialize further by going on to graduate school and getting a master’s degree in a particular engineering field. However you can also get engineering jobs with just a BS degree.

Get your professional engineer license. It will help your career advancement greatly if you do. In order to do so you will first need to pass the Fundamentals in Engineering exam and complete four years of work experience in an acceptable position, as well as meeting your state’s requirements. The final step if to pass a Principles and Practices of Engineering exam.

Engineering is a great field to work in. It is a creative discipline that is also challenging. Starting salaries for engineers are relatively high and there is typically much room for advancement. Choosing to become an engineer is a sound move for the future. It provides a solid foundation for a successful career.
