How to Succeed on the Sat

Sunday, May 31st, 2009
John asked:

When it comes down to getting accepted into college, nothing matters as much as the SAT. Grades and GPA vary from school to school, as do extracurricular activities. The SAT, however, is standardized, and is universally used to sift who will be accepted from those who will be rejected.

Studying for the SAT is a long-term process that should begin in a student’s sophomore year when they take the PSAT. Not only does this make them automatically eligible for National Merit Scholar, but it gives a valuable score report showing strengths, weaknesses, and projected scores. From here, decide what you need to work on.

For a few months, work just on vocabulary. It will help on both the critical reading sections and the Essay in the writing section. For those good at math, vocabulary will be the difference between a 2000 and a 2200.

Keep taking practice tests as you get closer to your SAT test date. The SAT, remember, is standardized, so you will see the same questions on the real thing. This makes taking practice tests well worth your time. You can buy a book, or find some free online (I recommend http://satests.brinkster.net). This website reviews free SAT study material available online and ranks the best web sites by their ease of use, quality of test, and helpfulness as an education resource. There are 14 full SAT Tests reviewed, along with 1,300 Critical Reading questions, 940 Writing questions, and 1,610 Math questions.

With each practice test, you’ll find yourself becoming more and more familiar with the questions, and you’ll find it easier to concentrate for 4 hours at a time. Be sure to review the questions you miss. If you need help in a particular category, take quizzes only on that topic. One common area for improvement is reading comprehension and passage analysis. You can find these tests all over the internet, like at English AP websites. Don’t forget your teachers too! Many school teachers keep extra resources they would be glad to help you with. And seeing your determination may help later when you have an 89.9% and they’re choosing between giving you an A or a B in the class.

Practice tests may be long and boring, but if they’re free and get you into the college of your choice, they are completely worth it.

Audio Books Helped Melinda Get Into the College of Her Choice!

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009
Paul Simari asked:

Her parents both graduated from Princeton. Her brother is a junior at Princeton now, and plays on the basketball team there. Even her uncle is a mathematics professor at Princeton, so when it came time for Melinda to choose a college that she wanted to apply to, it was an easy choice. She wanted to be a Princeton Tiger as well.

But Melinda knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Her brother, James, didn’t have the best grades in the world, but was able to get in with a basketball scholarship. Melinda, however, wasn’t blessed with any natural talents, and so she would have to get in like everyone else - the hard way. She was a B student in high school - pretty good. But ‘pretty good’ usually isn’t good enough to be accepted at Princeton - you have to be among the best. She had some other positive things going for her - she was the leader of the school marching band, and had done a lot of volunteer work with cancer patients. So with some luck, and maybe the help of her professor uncle, Melinda had hope.

But there was one thing that was sure to work against Melinda - her SAT scores. Melinda was a smart girl, but for some reason, test taking was just not her strong point. Maybe it was nerves, she wasn’t sure. The first time she took the SAT about halfway through her junior year, she scored a 1090 - still in the top third of her class, but nowhere near Princeton material, which requires a minimum SAT score of 1200 to even be considered as an applicant. If Melinda was to become a Tiger, she would need to improve her SAT score … but how?

When Melinda approached her guidance counselor with her problem, the counselor gave her an audio book on tips and techniques for taking tests. “Go home tonight and listen to this,” Melinda’s counselor said. “Take notes on what you hear, then return it to me. This should help you raise your score to what you need it to be.”

Melinda went home that night and listened to the tape. She jotted down things that the tape said would help her score higher - such as to get a good nights sleep the night before, and listen to classical music for the hour directly prior to the test. That weekend, she took the SAT a second time, and immediately noticed that she was more relaxed, focused, and sharp. Sure enough, when she received the results in the mail, Melinda learned she had scored a 1270 - an improvement of almost 200 points! Later on in the year, she was accepted to Princeton and joined her brother and uncle as fellow Tigers - and she had an audio book to thank for her success!

Live Nba Scores - Spurs Hand Celtics Another Loss

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009
Peri Witny asked:

Boston faced a well rested San Antonio Spurs at their homecourt, Banknorth Garden but were defeated by the oldest team in the NBA with a 105-99 basketball result. The Spurs scored 11 points in the last 40 seconds to win the game.

Roger Mason made a three pont field goal with 20.4 seconds remaining to give San Antonio the upperhand. Manu Ginobili then hit four free throws before Mason added a pair as the Spurs increased their distance from Boston. It was the Spurs’ ninth win in 11 games.

Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Seldom used Matt Bonner scored his second most output in scoring with 23 and went 3 of 6 from the three point area. Ginobili tallied 19 points as he came off the bench.

Kevin Garnett had 26 points and 12 rebounds while Paul Pierce had 19 points and eight rebounds. Ray Allen added 18 points while Rajon Rondo passed the ball around to tally 16 assists. With this loss, the Celtics have allowed their opponents to score 100 points or more in three straight games and in six of their last eight. It does mean that their opponents have increased their scoring averages to 99.1 for the last eight games and have improved their field goal shooting as well to 44.7. Boston coach Doc Rivers has to find away to bring back their tenacity in defense. The Celtics will then start a six game road trip in between the All Star weekend before heading back to Boston.

Spurs coach Greg Popovich rested his key starters when his team played the Denver Nuggets. Ginobili sat out that game with a bruised hip. Duncan, Michael Finley and Tony Parker were also rested as the team are into their eight game, three week road trip. So far they have posted a 2-1 record.

Duncan had the ball and made a basket and was fouled. He made the extra free throw and pushed the Spurs to a 90-87 lead. Ray Allen sank a field goal to cut the lead to one. Garnett hit consecutive jumpers during the Celtics’ ball possession for a 93-90 lead at 1;36 at the clock. Bonner then hit a jumper from the free throw line while Garnett missed his attempt. Mason then made his three pointer that restored the upperhand to the Spurs at 95-93. Boston turned the ball over during an inbounds play with Ginobili stealing the ball and fished a clear-path foul which resulted in two free throws and ball possession back to the Spurs. They extended the lead to 101-93 but Eddie House and Garnett refused to go down and made consecutive three point jumpers to reduce the lead to two. It became a free throw shooting time for the Spurs as the team sank four charities for the final scores.

What do I put as my SAT score when applying to college?

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009
Lily asked:

I took the SAT two times. My Writing score went up the second time, but my math score dropped. When I’m applying to college, can I put the higher score for both writing and math? Or can I only use the scores from ONE of the tests?

What are my chances of getting accepted with a SAT score of 1100?

Thursday, May 14th, 2009
randerson0526 asked:

ok so…My SAT scores was a little over a 1100 for all three sections. I got this score both times I took the SAT. So what are my chances of getting into a state college in Maryland when my gpa is about 3.0. Also I take mostly standard classes.

I do plan on taking the ACT, hoping I do a lot better on that. But im still wondering what my chances are based on my bad SAT and gpa.

SAT Score: 1900
Talking about the UCs, CSUs, and some of the privates in CA.
Also, setting aside all other factors (extracurriculars, etc).
Yes, I do attend a high school in CA. Does it affect my chances if I attend a high school with a low API average.

Is an SAT score of 1800 good for most public universities?

Monday, May 4th, 2009
acablue asked:

Actually, I just took the PSAT, not the actual SAT. But I’m assuming that score will improve at least a little bit when I take the real thing. So, in your opinion, is that a good score?

By the way, do most colleges look at the 2400 scale or the 1600 scale?

James
