How to Get Into a Great College
Friday, October 24th, 2008Peter M. Jones asked:
Beginning the college process can be a little daunting task because there is no fixed formula for getting into college and moreover, whatever combination of courses one studied at high school makes no difference in the success rate of getting admission to your dream school. Grades, SAT/ACT scores, and class rank are certainly looked into, but while doing well in all three may be enough to get you into some schools, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get into all your choices. In fact, even students with perfect SAT scores and straight A’s are sometimes denied admission by some of the more elite colleges and universities. Here are some tips that’ll help you navigate the admissions process and succeed in your application.
You must know that selective colleges have more qualified applicants than their limit. This is where extracurricular activities come into play. In fact, extracurricular activities can often tilt the decision in your favor when compared to other students with equivalent grades/test scores but without much in the way of activities because they demonstrate your motivation and time-management skills. You should remember to inform college if pursuing academics and an after-school job or any other extenuating circumstances. According to The Princeton Review, highly selective schools generally place emphasis than average on a good essay. The essay questions on college applications are usually very open-ended, so it is prudent to talk about your experience or aspect of you or your life that was particularly meaningful.
Awards or other recognitions and achievements can weigh into your application’s consideration. Be sure to inform them if you have achieved any because good colleges and universities look for leaders and achievers and not just academic performers.
Recommendations of your teachers and counselors do matter. Get a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor who thinks you’re brilliant and include it with your application packet. Similarly, if a family member went to your college of choice, you may receive (not necessarily) some preferential consideration in admissions and this could count even more if more than one family member attended the college.
Most importantly, start planning early to get into the schools you want. Do your reasearch, collect updated information on the most sought-after colleges and universities and their admission criterias in advance. There are many online resource guides (like www.allaboutuni.com ) that assists high school students in selecting a college.

Recruitment in the Army
Tuesday, October 21st, 2008Kris Koonar asked:
To enlist for military service is a dream for many students. It involves a lot of discipline thorough the job training, advance study monetary assistance, the need to cultivate leadership skills, lead an adventurous life and above all the urge to serve the country. If you want to enlist yourself with the military services, you can opt for the online application procedure. The recently developed army enlistment process allows the candidate to first evaluate and match his interests and abilities and only then decide on which job category he fits into. It also helps candidates with the entire recruitment process.
The information collected by the army enlistment personnel is kept private and confidential until the candidate himself chooses to divulge it to a recruiter. You will first come across a set of questions that you can complete all at once or save it, to complete later. Once the questionnaire is completed, the enlistment process starts matching your profile and interest with a detailed list of services in the database of the army server and then it lets you know about the results. The questionnaire involves:
Step 1:
The first step enquires personal information. This is an important step and hence you need to provide all the information accurately, so that the database can provide a list of jobs best suited for you.
Step 2:
Next, choose the timeframe in which you want to apply for the service, so that the database can check for the available jobs within that time frame.
Step 3:
Searching for the availability of jobs may take some time and in that time you can review and select the jobs of your preference.
Step 4:
Once you get the list of jobs available, matching your profile, start prioritizing them as per your interests.
Step 5:
The online enlistment procedure has the Army Career explorer option that guides you in a simple way to begin your online enlistment procedure. After the first step, take the help of the career explorer and keep on providing information within the slots provided. Finally, when you have finished completing the application, send it to your military recruiter. To discuss the other details about the recruitment process, your recruiter will contact you.
The U.S military offers 4,100 jobs in various categories. Choosing from such a list is not easy and it is absolutely imperative that you choose the job that not only interests you, but also matches your skills. Read the brochure thoroughly and dont rely only on military recruiters. You can also log onto a chat room, one that caters to military personnel and ask the newly recruited candidates all the questions that bother you. A much better option would be talking to a person who has military experience, who is currently serving or has successfully completed both, the basic and advanced military training.
However, avoid talking to those who left the military under less-than-honorable services, like those who were discharged for non-compatibility. You need to take the entrance test for enlisting in the service. If you are opting for a service after secondary school education, you can opt for ASVAB, but if you desire the officer rank after finishing college, your ACT and SAT scores will have to be good enough. You can avail of additional choices in the military if you perform well and score well. Therefore, dont take the ACT or SAT scores lightly and study well, before taking the exam.

University Directory
Friday, October 17th, 2008Peter Salazar asked:
University Directory can be considered as a blessing for the students from all over the world to get such a dynamic opportunity to view this educational world of top universities from all over the world at the tip of their fingers. University Directory can not only be valued for its convenience to students but also has its specific importance for the parents as well as these directories are free of cost on the internet and the parents need not bother about the various admission procedures and other University dealings as they are already upto date with these informations from a University Directory.
It has a huge knowledge bank about universities depending upon Financial Aid, Athletics, Academics, Student’s loan consolidation, college rankings and many more categories. There is a total widespread profile for each and every state university. Students can receive ample information to get a reputed University degree from a top class university right from his comfortable chair at home. It is a very easy desk to research on ones favourite university based on his/her preference.
A University Directory has all the informations about various online degrees available from top colleges based upon SAT scores or based upon ACT scores. The top three Universities based upon SAT scores are Harvard University, California Institute of Technology, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology respectively. Whereas the top three institutes based on ACT scores are namely Pomona College, Yale University, and Harvard University respectively.
There are other useful categories where universities are categorized based upon ‘maximum average loan for student’, ‘utmost total students enrolment’, maximum salary paid for a full time faculty’, ‘maximum cost of attendance’ etc. Further there is a long run of universities in the university catalogue alphabetically. There are a handful of resources for the students like the “Student Encyclopedia” for reference and also research right from the desk of the Cambridge Collection. There is an option for students to meet and share their doubts and experience on admission, examinations, colleges, etc. in a student discussion forum. The widespread career profile list supplies us with up-to-date informations on numerous job profiles each one with a detailed job information, education and schooling necessities, remuneration information, working state of affairs, service outlook etc and a wide ranging database of many other information.

How To Choose The Best Tutor For The Sat, Act, And Gcses
Wednesday, October 15th, 2008Alan Jacobson asked:
What to look for in a SAT, ACT, or GCSE tutor:
The major goal you have in working with a tutor for school is to raise test scores, such as the SATs or ACT, to improve your performance in a specific area, or, for students in the UK, to improve grades on the GCSE and to successfully complete A-levels. Almost any student can benefit from targeted and personalized tutoring, regardless of their current level of understanding and performance. The following are what you should look for in a college tutor or university tutoring program:
1. Small Class Size: If you decide to go the group route, make sure it will be interactive, and where most of the participants are at the same level. The last thing you need is to be kept back in your SAT, ACT, or GCSE tutoring class by people who don’t know as much as you do, or lost in a class of people who are far ahead.
2. Personal Instruction: You should feel like you are treated like the only student in the world, and that the instruction is specifically tailored to your needs and the admissions requirements of the colleges or universities you are trying to get into. That usually starts with the instructor fully assessing your needs and skills.
3. The tutor or instructor should push you: You should feel that the instructors are teaching just ahead of what you know, gently pushing you but not going too fast. You should feel the exhilaration of learning something new each time.
4. Materials should be varied: There should be diagrams, verbal instruction, reading, and writing. We learn better and retain what we’ve learned to a greater degree when we learn in several mediums.
5. Homework: There should be thoughtful and useful homework after each lesson, and this homework should help you learn the material better. In addition the tutor instructors should help you go over your homework so you learn from your mistakes and know the weaknesses you can overcome.
6. Measurable results: Not only should the college tutors have references, they should also be able to give you a measurable result of their past teaching, such as the average degree that their students SAT or ACT scores rose, the grades they got on the GCSE, or the level of college they got into.
After your tutoring you will be uniquely suited to go to the university or college that fully meets your potential, and this will make the learning experience truly worth it.

The Kings Point Promise: How to Get There - Admissions
Saturday, October 11th, 2008Barney Garcia asked:
A life with education at King’s Point, The United States Merchant Marine Academy’s base, is strife with activity, adventure and fun, a lot of learning, multi cultural experience and a training regime which only death can make it easier. It promises deliverance of knowledge, skills and the attitude that are expected of a leader in the fiercely competitive world tomorrow.
The maritime Industry and the Armed Forces in General have the promising careers and lucrative future the cadets look for, after graduating out of the academy. The options a cadet gets to choose from are multitudinous and it’s just a matter of asking for what suits one, the best.
Getting there might not be easy, but having got there, an aspiring cadet would certainly have something to write home about. The Academy, like its sister service academies has stringent regulations and check in place to be able to get the best of the applying lot in. A nomination from an approved official is mandatory on top of other common requirements like fairly high mental aptitude, especially in maths, sciences and engineering. The candidate must also be of a high moral character, aged 17-25, unmarried and having no obligation towards any dependents. One must also exhibit high levels of competency in physical and mental acuity and produce college transcripts, notwithstanding the high requirements of SAT scores and the like. The cadet also should have had experience in servicing the humanity at some point previously.
Like in all other military academies, the aspiring cadet also has to go through a physical examination called a CFP (Candidate Fitness Assessment). He also has to produce college transcripts, a high score in SAT tests and other such tests one would have administered during academics. A high level of physical prowess is also required and goes without saying that the candidate must have an active interest in current affairs and Sports.
The King’s Point experience blends a rich cultural experience with Military precision learning and training experience for about 4 years. The King’s Point Graduates are in demand everywhere for having been through that particular level of training. They also come with an experience of camaraderie with fellow cadets belong to every imaginable race, culture and values. It does a venerable job of qualifying young and ambitious men and women to rise up to the cause of humanity by rendering service to the nation, the people and the humanity.

Steps Towards Becoming an Army Officer
Saturday, October 4th, 2008Kris Koonar asked:
There are two kinds of officers in the US Army, Warrant Officers and Commissioned Officers. Each category has its own specialized training, areas of expertise, and responsibilities.
Warrant Officer:
Warrant Officers are highly specialized experts in their career fields, and function as trainers. They provide valuable guidance to both commanders and organizations. People who are accepted into the Warrant Officer Candidate School (WOCS) must attend the Basic Combat Training (BCT). After BCT, they have to attend WOCS. Warrant Officers also pilot the ultra advanced helicopters on combat, reconnaissance and rescue missions, for which they are trained with the Warrant Officer Flight Training (WOFT) program, starting directly after the WOCS.
To apply for the Warrant Officer Candidate School or Warrant Officer Flight Training program, one must have a high school diploma, be between 18 and 33 years of age and a citizen of the United States. They have to score 90 or higher on the revised Flight Aptitude Selection Test (FAST) and get at least 110 General Technical (GT) score on the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). They must also meet the height and weight standards and pass a standard physical exam.
Commissioned Officers:
Commissioned Officers lead Soldiers during every aspect of a mission. They must make decisions quickly for successful completion of the mission. They bear the ultimate moral responsibility for their decisions. The four ways to become a Commissioned Officer in the US Army are the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), the Officer Candidate School, United States Military Academy at West Point, and Direct Commission Officer
You must enroll in Army ROTC at the same time you enroll in college. Army ROTC courses are available at more than 800 colleges and universities. Cadets take a curriculum of military courses and of elective leadership. The graduates automatically become Second Lieutenant.
Another way is the Officer Candidate School (OCS). After completing BCT, candidates train for a full 14 weeks and then must attend the Officer Basic Course. To apply for Officer Candidate School, you must be a U.S. citizen and a college graduate between 19 and 29 years old at the time of selection.
West Point is one of Americas top universities. Many past graduates of West Point are leaders in government and the military. An applicant to West Point must be between 17 and 23 years old, a U.S. citizen, single, not pregnant, and without legal obligation to support any children. They must have an above-average academic record. They can be congressionally nominated, or with a service-connected nomination, and must have high SAT scores.
Each of the professional branches, like Judge Advocate General (JAG), the Chaplain Corps, and the Medical Corps has an officers training program that trains educationally qualified civilian professionals, and provides direct commission into their field. The training time for these direct commission officers generally varies, depending on the career field.
Internal Recruitments:
The Army Green to Gold program offers enlisted soldiers in the Army the opportunity to get a commission as an Army Officer. This offers enlisted soldiers two ways to earn a baccalaureate degree. The Green to Gold Scholarship Option is for soldiers who want to leave active duty to attend college, and the Green to Gold Active Duty Option caters to Soldiers who wish to remain on active duty and also attend college.
