Understanding Your SAT Scores

August 3rd, 2008 | Posted in SAT test   Comments Off
Rachel Goldstein asked:

You took your SATs and your scores are ready. You can tell from the basic numbers that you were smart enough to do well, but you think that your intelligence might be failing you because you aren’t quite sure what all of the numbers in front of you mean. That’s because there are multiple different ways to look at your SAT test scores. Here is the basic information that you need in order to fully understand what your SAT scores mean.

First, as you’ll recall from taking the test, there are two different main sections of the SAT. Each section is scored out of a possible 800 points, with the minimum score in each section being 200. This means that the highest you could get on your SATs would be 1600, if you scored a perfect score in each section. On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you managed to score the worst score possible on both sections, the lowest possible SAT score would be 400. Therefore, your SAT score is somewhere between 400 and 1600. This flat score is what matters in terms of the answer you will give when someone asks you, “what did you score on your SATs?”

However, it is more than just this simple number which matters about your SAT scores. One of the other numbers that you will see when you look at your SAT scores is a percentile rank. This number is indicative of how you fared in comparison with other students who took the SAT exam. For example, if your percentile rank is 92, then you scored higher than 92% of the people taking the exam. Because the percentile rank is related only to those students who have taken the SAT exam recently (students in the graduating class of the year prior to your year of exam), you may not have to get a perfect score in order to have a high percentile ranking. In other words, you may do better than 99% of students but not have a perfect 1600 SAT score. This difference is part of the importance of your percentile rank in comparison with your flat SAT scores.

So, what happens if you’ve reviewed your SAT scores and your percentile rank in light of this new information and you don’t like your SAT scores? Well, first of all, you can remember that you may re-take your SAT exams. However, before you do this, you might want to remember that there is more to your SAT scores than just your flat score and your percentile ranking. You may have opted to take SAT subject tests, such as higher level math SAT tests which examine your skills beyond the basic math and reasoning of the plain SAT. These scores will also be on your SAT score sheet and will be indicative of you overall advanced skill to the colleges looking at your application.

Even if you did not take a separate SAT subject test, you did take the writing portion of the SAT exam. This is important because colleges use this to enhance their understanding of your overall SAT scores. You may have gotten mediocre scores on your SAT in comparison to others who took the same exam but if your writing sample is particularly good, your college admissions boards may see that you have what it takes to communicate effectively during your college career. A quality writing portion on the SAT can make the difference between two students with similar scores in terms of which one gets in to the college of his or her choice. Your SAT score for the writing portion of the exam will be a low number, with two being the lowest writing score and twelve being a perfect writing score. So don’t fret when you see a low number on this portion of the SAT scores that you’re looking at!

That said, you probably have a basic understanding of how your SAT scores look now, especially when you take into consideration your percentile rank, but if you’re looking for some good hard numbers, here’s what you should know. An average score on each section of the exam is around 500, so a total flat SAT score of 1000 is average. This is good for getting in to most colleges. If you want to get into one of the “better” colleges, you will want to strive to get your SAT scores up higher, in the 1300 - 1400 range (or higher, of course). But bear in mind that your SAT scores are only going to be one part of your application so if you bombed them, you can re-take them and put together a great application package to offset the initial low SAT scores.

What is the difference between an ACT test and a SAT test?

July 30th, 2008 | Posted in SAT test   Comments Off
Mental asked:

I just took an ACT test for a potential employer.
I thought the test was frivolous and ridiculous.
I’ve been out of school for 30 years.
I did pass with a score of a 4, a 5, and a 6, but I wouldn’t expect everyone to be able to pass them since I felt I had such difficulty. If I would have an opportunity to prepare for those questions, I would have been able to ace them all.
Are SAT tests as ridiculous? Do you take stock in any of these tests?
Do they really prove one can do well in the workplace?

SAT Dreaded Sat Experimental Section

July 26th, 2008 | Posted in SAT test   Comments Off
Karl Schellscheidt asked:

Officially the dreaded SAT experimental section is called the variable section. The first section is going to have essays that are 25 minutes long. The essay will then be followed by another six 25 minute sections. There are then two 20 minute sections and one 10 minute section.

One of those multiple choice 25 minute sections is going to be an experimental one. The people who administer the SAT need to test questions for future exams. This is to see if enough people get them right and/or wrong. So they use you as guinea pigs!

Since one of those sections is going to be experimental, it does not count toward your grade. It’s very difficult to pick out the experimental section, but I’ll give you a little bit of a tip:

If you get to a section that seems really weird or has questions that you haven’t seen before and it’s somehow different from the rest, it’s probably the experimental one. Don’t panic. Stay positive. Just tell yourself it’s the experimental one and move on.

Now, if you get three 25 minute critical reading sections, one of them will have been the experimental one. If you get three 25 minute math sections, one of them will be the experimental one. And if you get two 25 minute writing sections, you’ll know one of those will be the experimental section.

So it’s kind of hard to tell which one it is until you’re almost finished, but if you get to one that’s weird and totally throws you off, don’t think “Oh my gosh, the whole thing’s going down the tube now!” Tell yourself “You know what, that one was weird, that one was harder than I expected. It’s probably the experimental one”. Stay positive. Keep moving. That’s the way you maximize your SAT score.

Get a Better Understanding of the SAT Test

July 21st, 2008 | Posted in SAT test   Comments Off
Daniel Millions asked:

The SAT test is one of the most important tests a high school student will ever take. It is a large determinant of what college the student will get in to and a respected scale of one’s intelligence and college readiness. Colleges like the SAT because it is a standardized test; individual subject grades are not as weighted due to the fact that different schools have dissimilar grading scales. The SAT will be the same wherever you take it, whether you are in Maryland or California.

SAT stands for Scholastic Aptitude Test, and was designed to be a measure of one’s readiness for college. The SAT-I, or Reasoning Test, has a reading, writing, and mathematics section. The reading part comprises comprehension, critical reading, and sentence completion. The majority of the writing section is an essay, which must be completed in twenty five minutes. It also includes word choice, word usage, and a variety of grammar questions. Statistics, number operations, geometry, probability, and algebra are all included in the SAT. Fortunately for many test takers, the SAT does not include trigonometry, although that topic is part of another formal test, the ACT.

Each section of the SAT is worth 800 points, meaning the top score for the entire test is 2400 points. Each section is scored on a scale of 200-800, so the minimum score is 600, not zero. Some colleges do not take into account the writing section, and instead focus solely on the reading and math sections. In this case, the traditional 1600 point scale is utilized. It is only a matter of time before all colleges and universities acknowledge the writing section and the 2400 point scale becomes permanently widespread.

The organizational structure of the SAT is designed to prevent any cheating and make the test flow more smoothly. Everybody starts out with the 25-minute essay, and ends with another writing segment, which lasts 10 minutes. All of the sections in between, however, appear in a mixed order for different people. For example, while one person is answering reading questions, another might be on the math section. Most of the individual questions are the same on every test, as developing separate questions for every test taker would be highly inefficient (SAT designers have enough work making new questions every year).

Signing up for the SAT can be done online or through the mail. Most people nowadays do it online, as doing so expedites the process of registering. One can register online and after taking the test they can go back to the website and view their scores. It usually takes about two and a half weeks for score reports to be available on the site. About a month and a half after the test, scores are mailed out as well, so if one does not check online, they will still get their scores.

Currently, the basic fee for taking the SAT is forty five dollars. You can also opt to purchase additional services, such as being sent a list of questions and answers (which you would receive post-test, of course), or a comprehensive SAT study book. There is even an option to purchase just the answers, although why one would do that is questionable, as answers are useless without questions.
